What Causes Hair Loss?

People often don’t know why hair loss accurse and the measures to take to stop the problem. It’s always hard to see the struggle people face when hair loss is an issue in their lives. For the women I meet it seems like it’s one of the touchiest subjects and I can see them tearing up when clumps of their hair is coming out.

As I was coloring my friend’s hair she looked over at the color left in the blow as I finished and she said to me, “You never used to have color left over, I can’t believe how much hair I have lost.” That was so sad to hear and such a vivid way of seeing that she has less hair now. I didn’t even visually notice it until she used the comparison. There are things that we can change about our hair like color, length , if it’s straight or curly and even the texture of our hair. But we all know it’s not that simple to grow out new hair after hair loss accurse. People around me worry about this all the time, so I will try to answer some questions you may have and give you some possible solutions to prevent hair loss or slow it down. I always tell my clients if I could slow down hair loss even a little I would do everything in my power. The first thing you need to do is figure out why you are experiencing hair loss and then figure out how to fight it based on your reason.

Why does my hair fall out?

Most common causes could be:

Heredity hair loss

It's the most common cause of hair loss. Unfortunately it can be passed down, especially if both your parents had early hair loss. Women with hereditary hair loss see thinning in the hairline or behind the bangs and they might notice their scalp showing more. This can start as early as in your 20s.

Here’s the Solution

Now the good news is that this can be tested by doing a scalp biopsy and if that’s why you are experiencing hair loss you can apply minoxidil to the scalp twice a day and that can stop further thinning say Badreshia-Bansal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Stress causes hair loss

Is there something going on in your life that is causing extra stress? This is usually when people start losing hair. That’s what happened to me, I over worked myself before a long vacation, got very sick right when I got there and on top of that for the next 3 months my hair started shedding for the first time in my life.  Women typically notice hair loss between 6 weeks to 3 months after the stressful event. At its worst, handfuls of hair may come out.

Here’s the solution

Hair loss is also an indicator of bad health so this might be a good time to see your Doctor. Find ways to reduce your stress and understand that if you don’t, hair loss may continue. When I got back from my vacation I was more relaxed, I also bought Biotin suppliants for hair, skin and nails and after 3 months my hair stopped shedding. "Biotin deficiency is rare and low levels may result in brittle nails and hair loss," explains Dr. Stuart. "However, hair loss and brittle nails may have multiple causes and taking biotin supplements may help to reverse it." It's important to consult your doctor on what the healthy dosage of Biotin is to avoid overdosing.

Dieting can cause hair loss

Diet can play a role, too. Shortfalls in protein and iron can bring hair loss. So can extreme weight loss, says Paradi Mirmirani, MD  Vallejo, CA. And not just weight loss but diet change as well.

Here’s the solution

Hair can start to regrow in about 6 months, if the cause is resolve. And if your diet isn't great, take steps to improve it. I personally know someone who was on a diet for only 20 days and half of her hair fell out. Her hair was all over her house for months after. Her diet wasn’t even a bad diet like we hear of some crazy diets for weight loss. She went from eating junk food and unhealthy food to a healthy diet but it was obviously lower calories then she was used to. So the “change” in diet caused her hair to fall out. She continued to eat more healthy and eventually all her hair grew back. You could see it when a few inches of new hair came in and it would stick out from all her hair. It looked like she had bad flyaway’s for about a year until it grew long enough to lay down and blend into her hair. 6 years later she continues to live a healthier life style and doesn’t experience hair lose any longer.

Thyroid Problems

Problems with your thyroid gland can lead to hair loss. Too much or too little hormones can cause hair loss. You also see changes in your skin and nails and  along with weight change.

Here’s the solution

A blood test given by your Doctor can confirm if you have the problem and medication can be given to return your hormones to a normal level. That can help with hair loss and other symptoms you may have been experiencing.

Here are a few more hair loss causes:

  • Surgery
  • General anesthesia
  • A change in medication
  • Childbirth
  • A high fever
  • Flu
  • Severe anemia
  • Extreme psychological stress
  • Underlying scalp conditions
  • Skin disease

Here’s the solution

In some of the cases above such as pregnancy or major surgery, reassurance and time is the best remedy. “If medication is the culprit, talk to your doctor about lowering your dosage or switching drugs. If it's stress-related, reduce anxiety” says, Paradi Mirmirani, MD, in Vallejo, CA.

Conclusion

Hopefuflly you have figured out why you are experiencing hair loss and now can apply the appropriate solution. When I experienced sever hair shedding for the first time in my life I took measures and applied all the solutions I researched above that applied to my situation. I hope you do the same and educate yourself and take the steps to prevent hair loss. In the mean time try to relax and not stress as much because that will only make matters worse.

I hope this article helps you, if it did please share this with your friends and family and also leave comments below. If there is something I didn’t mention and you know it helped you with hair loss I would love to hear about it and hopefully it will help someone as well.
